Doctor, member of learned societies, amateur painter and engraver, Doctor Gachet buys a house to Auvers-sur-Oise in 1872. He installs a press there on which he draws and engraves together with Cézanne, Pissarro and Guillaumin.

In 1890, at the request of Pissarro, Paul-Ferdinand Gachet - specialist in psychiatry - welcomes Vincent Van Gogh upon his/her arrival to Auvers. Van Gogh immortalizes doctor Gachet by realizing three times his portrait: two paintings and an etching. The court shaded of lime trees still resounds with lunches around the vermilion table immortalized by Vincent Van Gogh in the portraits of Doctor Gachet.

Registered with the garden on the additional inventory of historic monuments in 1991, the house, bought by the Departmental Council of Val-d'Oise in 1996, opened its doors to the public in 2003, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Van Gogh's birth. The collection of paints and engravings of the doctor was scattered but the former wallpapers still carry the mark of the past collisions.
